Hi Folks,

I was giving our engine its winter oil change and noticed while looking in the filler cap a piece of material which I don't remember seeing before and wondered if you could shed any light as to what it is and if it should be there. Its the darker straight edged bit . The engine starts first time and chugs along nicely and uses no oil. I have attached some photos and sorry for the quality.

Many thanks,

Rob

What is the nature of this "piece of material". Hard, soft, rigid, flexible, metallic, rubber ???

Did you try to remove it.

Someone mistakenly thought they could pump the oil out this way and this is a lost piece of their oil extraction equipment ????

Hi Vics,

Thank you for reply .Its a hard rigid material ,not sure if its metal or not and will need another closer look to establish .It is firm and and not loose ,ie floping around . It is not part of an oil extractor as have used Pela extractor for last 14 years ,using dip stick to extract. I just cannot remember seeing it before , although maybe I have just not noticed it. As boat is now out of water would like to establish if there is an issue so time to put right before next season.

Cheers

Rob

Hopefully the pic has attached. If it has, it is the black lever assembly inside the timing cover. The governor assembly is removed in the photo. Hope this helps.

Is it not part of the lever for the centrifugal governor mechanism?

Yes I think that's it. # 17 in the diagram below, and the sliding sleeve #16 which is operated by the governor weights #11 ( of which there are 6)

Hi Folks

Many thanks for your responses and much appreciated . I'm not really gened up on diesels and would be interested to know what its function is.

Many thanks

Rob

If the engine revs too high, it cuts the fuel supply by moving the rod that is connected to the injectors' pegs (which increase / decrease the amount of fuel being delivered).
