I have a boat with a volvo 2002 but no service manual. What type of oil do i use normal auto oil or marine oil?? Ive got a new oil filter and impeller. is there any thing else i need to change. The alternator belt has not been slackened off but looks in good condition - do i need to change it or just carry a spare incase. Is there any gear box oil to change??

You can download an Owner's Manual from here. It tells you everything you need to know. I have a 2003 and use Halfords diesel engine oil or Halfords synthetic oil. Carry a spare alternator belt - it doesn't need changing unless it's worn.

Just like PVB, I use halfords oil. Cheap and does the job. just look for the black oil container's. Mineral oil for diesel engines.
I have 2002 and there one or two things you should think about. We are now in the spring and I do not know if your boat has been laid up for the winter? You may have the boat out all year?
The reason I mention this is that it is advisable to to remove the old oil and filters when the boat is laid up due to sulphor build up. Water needs to be removed and replaced with anti corrosion and antifreeze. there is a drain plug on the 2002.
All of these details are in the manual as indicated by the previous posters but the timing is important depending on the time you use the boat.

Re: Oil Changes

Just a comment, but if you ever had a Sulphur build up in your lube oil after just a summers cruising then your engine as well as every other engine would have classic corrosion pits throughout its bearings and oil wetted area. This just does not happen. Fuel oil in NE Europe has strict Sulphur limits and with a seasons cruising you will never use up the base additives put in lube to counter the acidic products of combustion.
Depending on installation and type of use, water build up over 2/3 years is the limitation in my exprience.

Re: Oil Changes

Brian, I appreciate your knowledge in this matter but I the instructions I have read instructions for laying up which says you should change your oil and filter for this reason. It doesn't distinguish between summer months cruising and high useage. I would think that if there was any doubt then preventative measures were important and would improve the longevity of the engine?

Regards.

Peter.
