Volvo 2002 Gearbox problem

I have a VP 2002 - finding that the gearbox sometimes does not engage when selecting forward. Seems to be fine in reverse, but in forward you have to push the selector forward more and then with more revs it will select with a big clunk - which can't be good for it or if you select reverse and then forward straight away that sometimes does the trick. Not good for the stress levels in close quarters...

Wondering if this is something serious going in the gearbox or just something that needs adjusting. Any ideas?

Thanks, J

Suggest your cable at gearbox end needs adjustment. Both forward and astern gears should engage at tickover ie before the engine control cable moves. Only inspection can show what is needed.

certainly a similar problem on my old Yanmar (it also has a cone clutch like the Volvo) was down to cable adjustment.

dont leave it as it is and simply use it - cone cluthces can wear quickly and are expensive even as Yanmar spares. You'd probably need to sell the boat to buy a Volvo one! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If none of that works, gearboxes are very easy to strip down and work on. Deffo DIYable.

I've just had similar problems with the gearbox on my MD2020 after the winter. I shortened the cable twice by a couple of turns but it was not better. I checked the gearbox oil and that the engine was engaged in forward and reverse by turning the prop by hand to make sure it was OK. After that it worked. Is there an issue with clutch/gearbox not engaging after standing for a while?

Hopefully re adjusting the control cable to give equal movement ahead and astern will correct this however some of the early gearboxes on these engines had a problem with the cones and with suitable persuasion Volvo would supply replacements to the chosen few at discount. They will probably tell you no chance...had good use /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The only consolation is that the later cones have a more suitablee surface finish and last longer. I believe the initial ones actually had a too superior finish for the job .

I hope you have a few spare arms and legs as not cheep!!!!

Thanks for all that.

Will check the linkage cable.

It's been going on for a while - certainly had a few moments last season, and we initially thought it was the foldiong prop not opening.

Shifting the lever into the slow poistion (positive) shaft doesn't move. Same in astern - rotates no problem.

Cheers

J
