Hi,

The alternator on my Volvo Penta 2002 has packed up. Can anyone suggest somewhere to get a new one, a secondhand one or get it reconditioned.

Basically end of last year just before I took her out of the water, I had a situation where unknowingly I was motoring for about 4 hours with a slight gash in the sea water cooling pipe - which was spraying lovely salt water all over the engine. Once discovered I washed the engine down with fresh water and sprayed a lot of WD40, but it must have got into the alternator.

Starter motor failed last week and the guy who mended it said it was just a bulb of corrosion inside. So I guess the same has happened to the alternator.

Any ideas - it looks fairly easy to get off and replace. I'm guessing a new one from Volvo would be pricey!

Personally I would take to specialist. I did when my starter motor packed up on my VP 2002. They stripped it down replaced broken parts and carried out a manufacturers modification. All this was done for very little money as it was not a Marine engineer. I'm sure you will get repaired or replaced by an alternator specialist at a lot less cost of Volvo.

Regards.

Peter.

took my altanator(aq130) into lucas service. advised that rebuild with new bearings would cost about 60-70 quids.

mines a sealed brushbox jobby as she's fitted into a petrol engined boat.

on diesel, i use commercially available car/van parts. but you'd need to consider your needs in terms of charging systems etc.

but i'd recommend lucas service (LSUK) as i've used them for years now and had very good service.

hope this helps. steve.

If you don't have a tacho driven off the alternator, your local car breakers has to be the cheap option. You'll probably need to keep your old alternator pulley or your alternator might not run fast enough.

I don't know if diesel cars have a w connection for their tacho, but it does seem likely and if so, your tacho will work.

I would suggest you remove the alternator and dismantle it yourself. The brush box is removed first. You should be able to see the slip rings and just the condition of them . deep grooves will cause trouble and can be smoothed out with the rotor in a lathe. The brushes can be repaced. The end plate (other end to the pulley) can be removed but look out for a wire connecting the output terminal to the diodes. If as you suspect it is a corrosion problem that should be obvious and you can clean it up. There is not much magic in them. If all else fails aveanoone.
regards will
