Just came back from a nice motor around the bay when the rattle i thought i heard from the gearbox area last night seems to be getting worse /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif,it happens in gear at tickover,in neutral it doesnt seem so bad i think, at anything over tickover it goes away,SWMBO noticed it as well, any ideas anybody? The reverse gear is an MS2B R

Have you checked your engine mounts? A friend had exactly the same conundrum on his Volvo some years ago and was on the point of lifting it out for a closer look, when I spotted the problem.

I was watching the motor while he went from tick-over to higher speed etc, and noticed very slightly more vibration on one of the mounts. We switched off, and inserted a piece of timber under the engine and lifted. The front port mounting bolt had fractured at its base and was 'knocking' on the base when the engine was at it lumpiest - i.e. tickover.

We removed the mount, found a local welder after a lot of trouble (this was in Majorca) who made a really good job of re-welding it to the base.

The bolt had obviously been like it for a fair time as the end of the bolt was rounded!

My friend hadn't spotted it because when looked at normally, everything looked in first class condition. The engine bracket was still firmly held in place on the mounting bolt with no sign of anything wrong.

Might be worth a look at your mounts. Do let us know what the final solution turns out to be.
