Hi All, I have a dripping raw water pump on my 1986 Volvo Penta 2001 Diesel 10hp inboard. As I under stand it there are 2 variations, one you can take front off and fit new seal from front and one from behind. would anyone out there know if you can identify which one you have. as if its the one from behind sods law there will be breakages so may as well buy new unit, as front seal one could be fixed for a tenner.

Hi, can only comment for a 1993 vintage 2003 engine, the only way to change the seals on this engine is to remove the pump. There are two seals, back to back with a spacer separating them. One seal prevents oil leaks from the engine, the other water leaks from the pump.

IMHO, if one seal has gone, best to remove the pump and service it properly by replacing both seals. Get a service kit from volvo dealer or similar.

Why don't you have a look at your own pump, remove front cover and extract the impellor. Then remove the cam (new moon shape bit) held in by 1 screw and then pull out the backplate and pin, you should now be able to see the seal. Hook out the old seal with small screwdriver and fit the new seal the same way round and reassemble.

There is a great deal of information on water pumps on this page of my website. http://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/Waterpump.aspx I would say that if the front seal has failed then the time has come to change the back one as well. It could be that you will find the shaft worn also. You may change your mind about replacing the pump when you find how expensive they are. A repair kit is much more reasonable.

Thanks guys some good information, yes pumps are silly money (service kit, pipe seal kit on order) did find a site where they do a exchange for £175 plus vat. so if it all falls apart in my hands that's where its going.

thanks Dave

Happydaze is correct - you may be able to do the outer seal without removing pump, I realised this in August 13 "after" removing the pump completely. Replaced both seals easily and used new pipe seals. Pump refitted and dripping ceased.
Easy first engine job for a novice. Have a video of it somewhere if you need any more info.
VP 2001 original pump ~ 1987 ish had some evidence of shaft wear but the new tighter seals made good.
