Hi - has anyone experienced the free to roam data on a vodaphone uk contract in mainland Europe?
I’ve been using Threes albeit throttled service for the last couple of years but their new T’s & C’s are not conducive to my requirement, (12 GB and you’re out!).

We’ve had to return to the UK for a week and I’m tempted to pick up a 12 month 40gb per month sim from vodaphone as we get good coverage from them at the marina and the villa...

So anyone using voda data since the eu regs came into force last month; are they throttling the service and how is it working?

If it’s a good service then I’ll pick up a card as 40gb per month ain’t perfect but it’s about the best caveat free roaming deal I can see right now...

Thanks in advance....

Nigel,

We use Vodafone on the Coté D'Azur and its very good. Good 4G coverage and great speeds. Much better than the throttled back 3 that I dabbled with for a while.

I would have no problems recommending them.

Based on recommendations from forumites I bought a Free.fr sim card from a vending machine offering a 100gb for 19.99 a month with no contract. You can then extend when you need to on the free.fr website. I bought a mifi on Amazon and it gives everyone on board a high speed connection - perfect for streaming. I also use Vodafone on my phone which has also been pretty good

I just run my iphone as a hot spot on one of the Vodafone 25GB sim only plans rather than do anything else. We had a dongle running on a French Orange plan, but the removal of roaming in the EU killed that requirement.

I've just bought an EE 30gb max plan for 20 quid a month. You get full speed for 15gb and then a service throttled to 60meg for the remaining 15gb while in the EU (or at least that's what the sales person stated).

On my 12gb three payg sims which I bought before coming away they just cut it off after 9gb quoting a fair usage policy.

I switched from 3 and am now using Vodafone, we have had good 3 or 4g service inc moorings in the Balearics. Spent last night in Calpe on 4g and currently type this as we sail past Alicante.

As you originally said, far better than 3's throttled service and you can hotspot from your phone.

I did read you're not supposed to use it for more than three months abroad without returning to the uk but we have used our boat wifi, connected via mobile network, for more than that without issue.

I've just been in Norway for a couple of weeks for work. Very good service; I actually ran a speed test to find out how good and got 107Mbps down and 16Mbps up. That's faster than most UK broadband. Most of my use was tethered to my work laptop, Vodafone are ok with that where most of the others block or limit it. I have 20Gb per month for £20 and that applies home or abroad.

I had Netflix on HD to start with and wondered why my data usage was enormous! Changed to download on low quality, can't tell much difference on picture and data usage a fraction of what it was.

Sky go always comes down in SD afaik but doesn't give you options to drop it further nor BBC iPlayer from what I can see.

Not tried FilmOn yet though.
