A friend is about to take a look at a Viudes 56 displacement motor yacht.

This particular one is a 1974 vintage and a recent 'outside of hull' survey talks about the need for partial re-fastening of the wooden hull in places, replacement of the bow thruster (seized & blades missing), unsiezing of the trim tabs as well as the need to fix the soft wood at the stern tubes, replace the anodes, pull the stainless (A2 grade) bolts holding the 'A' brackets and needing a damn good re-paint and antifoul.

Should he go and look (it is currently ashore) or walk/run away?

And... The props and rudders hang below the hull at the stern. I assume that it will not be able to dry out in mud without damage?

Many thanks in advance :-)

20 tons, 2x650hp GM diesels and (malfunctioning) trim tabs does not indicate displacement motor yacht. From the pics it looks like it has hard chines too, so I'd wager a guess this is a planing boat.

1300hp should be enough for around 30 knots, but max speed is listed as 12 knots. If true then there's some serious problem preventing the boat getting up on plane. Very strange.

I'd say your friend should run away unless he is a world class DIY-man.

I'm afraid I'll agree with previous posters,

thread is in my sig.
boat looks very similar construction to mine (ie. plywood on wooden frame) and definitely a planning hull. Various ads around, some state cruising 17 top speed 22kn.
Browse through the pages on my rebuilt thread to spot what your friend is going to go through.

"refastening" hull is hilarious, probably similar condition to mine.
pete is exaggerating a bit in hours spend rebuilding, probably no more than only 5-6K manhours ;)

up to your friend to decide (shouldn't be in a hurry boat will be there waiting for him next year and the year after, as long as she's in the hard, different story if she's in the water), but shouldn't be fooled that he only has to replace a bowthruster and sort out some softwood, ffs are they for real?

cheers

V.

PS. if he decides to go ahead, we need a rebuilt thread please :D
