Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

Advice from those familiar with the Fal would be welcome.
I'm planning to be there late August/early September, and aim to use folding bikes to explore inland from there, leaving the boat on a visitor's mooring for a few days: failing that, on her own anchors laid as a mooring.
It is twenty years since I was in the South-West, and then not in the Fal. It is probably even more crowded nowadays.
Is there any realistic prospect of achieving my aim?
Is there anything I could do in advance to secure some space?

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

Wasn't too bad early - mid August last year, watch out for regatta week tho!
Pontoons up river are cheap, but limited access ashore. If you can take bikes in your dinghy it would be fine though. A lot depends on your draught, we're 2.4 m which restricts a bit, shallower boats have a fair choice of anchorage.
Go for it!

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

You could maybe drop the bikes and someone off on the National Trust pontoon near Trelissick Gardens (as it is attached to the shore!) and then leave the boat on the Truro harbour office pontoons either up or downriver from Trelissick. Really lovely spot to base yourself.

What's your draft and keel type?

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

Thanks for quick responses : it looks promising!.
Keel is a slanted square fin, draft 1.9m. We can take both bikes to shore by dinghy & outboard (or paddles if wind not strong), but do need a hard landing: humping over mud is not on!
What limitations are there on length of stay?

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

Where do plan to explore by bike?
There is a nice anchorage behind Turnaware bar, other side to Trelissick, of the beach, it is sand, and there is a road / track inland to pick up main road. allows you access to the Roseland peninsula.
Just before Trelissick, Loe beach has a good landing, allows you to do Feock area.
Malpas has a small boat yard, hard landing and visitors bouys, also has pub.
St Mawes has vistors bouys and good landing.
Up river from St Mawes there is a couple of boat yards with slips, you may find a place to drop the hook, or they may have mooring.

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

Thanks for all the good information. We aim to spend time at Helligan and the Eden Project.
Having now worked my way into on-line maps, it looks like the Fowey would be another, perhaps better, base.
So any information on that would be equally welcome; hence a new post!

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

just a warning..Eden project is HEAVING in the summer. We gave up after queuing for 1.5hrs.. and that was just the ticket office, never mind the trouble actually getting there.
If you are super fit-with all those hills-Id think the villages on the Lizard could be lovely by bike. May not be your thing, but check out the airshow at the base if its when you are there.

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

look on the eden web site. it was chaep entry last year if you cycled to eden project /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

Yep! Noted the three quid off for arriving on a bike!
But what's the discount for coming from Arisaig under sail instead of by train or plane?

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

Thanks for the warning about Eden's congestion: that's enough to force a re-think about timing: maybe early October would be better?

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

It's the best cruising ground that doesn't speak Breton!

You may well find that, for the Helligan Garden, Mevagissey might well meet the need. There's an alongside quay berth just inside on the south pier, and good anchoring in two or three places outside. With your experience and normal stamping ground, 'mooring to two' should not be an problematic issue around there.

Consider also the anchorages at the mouth of the Helford.....

You'll find very good value in 'West Country Cruising' by Mark Fishwick. I prefer the older edition as being more informative, and you should be able to pick up a pre-owned copy quite cheaply.

There's plenty of expertise on the Fal around, but if you're stuck, PM me and I'll give you more detailed 'chapter and verse'.

Enjoi!

Re: Visitor\'s moorings in the Fal

There is an anchorage off Tremayne Quay up the Helford. You can land on the quay (National trust) and the track is about a mile to the public road. Good for Trelowarren, best food, (Yard Restaurant) and Helston, best pub, (Blue Anchor) etc.
It is possible to moor alongside the quay for a while, but try not to be too selfish.

Good idea, Fisherman. Thanks,

TO ALL: your inputs much appreciated: I can now make decisions and plans.

An excellent facility, this Forum!
