Hi all, want to go from the crouch round to Heybridge/Maldon on friday stay the night and return on saturday, i have no tender so require a berth I can step ashore from i dont want to lock in at the basin for such a short stay, does stebbings boat yard have any visitors moorings ? or possibly
around at maldon, I have noticed some wooden pontoons up river pass Hythe Quay which would do for an overnight stay or if anyone can help regarding contact tel no or an alternative mooring I
would be grateful. regards Stuart.

Adrian (Stebbings) has no visitors moorings as such but a few free ones at the moment. But you need a tender to get ashore and once the mud starts drying out you can't do that. It's neap(ish) as well so your only chance of stopping at Heybridge is either to lock in or take the mud and stay on board. Stebbings does have some moorings bow to a lighter from which you can take the ground (soft mud) and go ashore but they are/well were today, all full. Maldon does have a visitors pontoon provided you can take the mud but I have no experience of it although I believe people do stay on it when the tide has gone. The pontoons past Hythe Quay belong to the boatyard (Down's Road I believe but there are a couple there). You could try ringing the Water Baliff for info 01621-856487. I'm afraid our local directories don't cover the Maldon area.

HW Heybridge Friday evening is 1902, Saturday 0753 and 2012, Sunday 0906 and 2126., pretty mid range to neapish so you would need to get to Maldon Quay pretty close to HW.

I forgot that CRS Marine at Heybridge (just outside the lock) has modern pontoons. If you are shallow draft you could get possibly get on one of those (couldn't see today if there were spaces). The mud is soft and deep and providing your draft ain't too much that's a possibility. Again, I don't have access to Clint Swan's telephone number here but CRS Marine ought to be in the Direfctory Enquiries

Hi tillergirl thanks for all the information, I will phone the water baliff tomorrow. I note the tides
I have a bilge keel draw 1.3 metres so wiil have to get my timing spot on! if this fails I will sit in the mud throw the hook over and settle down for the night with a cuppa instead of a nice pint ashore.

double posting are rather frowned upon

Well you could certainly sit on a mooring. I'll check today whether the Heybridge Basin Sailing Association jetty pontoon is in position yet this year. You can land from a tender there for a little while after HW which gets you a run ashore for a pint.

That is my area.
Couple of options you could take.
Few pontons by the "jolly sailer" just moor up if any one moans jusy offer to pay, if not just "bunk in".
Also you could pick up one of my club swing moorings (millbeach marine club) thats right in front of the "millbeach pub" no one will moan if its just an overnight trip.
By pub bit of a sandy beach you could beach it, and step off once tide is out.
Afraid not many options down my way...

We were on the visitor pontoons at Maldon last Summer, with 1m draft we had 0.3 under us at HW neaps. Didn't spend the night there but people certainly do with twins keels.

Only problem was that the pontoons were covered with children fishing and they resent anyone coming to moor up, and its hard not to squash one or two :D

The visitors pontoon in Maldon (by the Queens head) dries out, but it's very soft mud, so if you go alongside there, you'll end up upright without too much trouble. You should have a couple of metres under you at high water, depending on tide. I don't know what the charge is now, but a tenner a night seems to ring a bell from a couple of years ago. That's if the harbour master bothers to come and see you.

What about the boatyard(s)?) upstream of the visitors pontoon at Maldon? Dylan Winter did a nice video of one of the boatyards, is it usually possible to arrange an overnight mooring there & who do you contact?

The outer pontoons at the yards have a lot more water than the visitors pontoon, we moored on one (the tourist launch berth) at LW+2 as the the visitor pontoon was then perched on a mountain of mud, couldn't find anyone in the yard, went shopping and moved onto the visitor berth at HW-1, ploughing the bottom as we went. A large Westerly twin keeler came alongside us (4.5' draft) and they were still touching at about HW when we left - if tides had not been making I would say they might have risked being neaped!

For overnight at the yards I guess you would have to contact each boatyard individually. Probably the best option would be to just go there, moor up in a space and then walk up to the yard and ask.

There are 4, all on the South bank, all with pontoons/jetties and, starting from the Queen's Head pub, they are:

The old Sailloft. Only about 20 or so berths. Colin Knox.
(don't have his number)

North Street Boatyard. Don't have their number, but Marinestore HQ is on site, so try them on 01621 854280.

Noddy Carding's yard. (don't have his number)

Downs Road Boatyard. Jim Dines 01621 859373

And one without pontoons is David Patient (Shipwright). On Fullbridge Wharf, right by the road bridge. No pontoons, but he may let you lie alongside one of the barges he usually has there. 07801 130530

Sorry I don't have all the 'phone numbers, but I hope it helps.
