Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

As was predicted, the weather window last week for sailing Cottontail to Ramsgate was too small. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Still, on the bright side there is lots to do on a Winter's evening in and around Portsmouth - can anyone suggest a place to tie up?

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

There are berths at Gunwharf but they are a bit choppy>Campers are just across the Harbour and you can get the water bus.

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

I suppose Gunwharf will be expensive but Haslar and Gosport Marinas are only a short walk from the very frequent ferry to Portsmouth. I can't think of anything you would do on a winter evening in Gosport except lose the will to live.

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

Highly recommend contacting Haslar marina,

Nice berths, great facilities.

And a short ferry ride to Gunwharf £2:00 return for Adults.

Only across the Harbour entrance from Gunwharf.

Regards

From QHM LNTM 42/05 06/09/2005

"d. Mariners are advised that there are no visitor berths or moorings at Gunwharf Quays, and that they will only be permitted to cross the harbour to Gunwharf quays if they have an assigned berth. The Gunwharf Berthing Manager is contactable on VHF Ch 80 or 02392 836732."

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

If you secure yourself a berth at Gunwharf, remember to ask permission from QHM on chl 11. prior to you crossing and you must cross from Balast Bouy. The harbour volunteer patrol will be on you if you don't!!!!!!!!!

LOL. A bit harsh though, The Castle is a fine establishment!

Good food as well - steak and kidney pudding is well recommended.

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

I'd pop into Gunwharf via Ballast and a quick call to QHM ch 11 - find a snug inside berth . Bit of a plastic village, but good cinema and plenty eateries. Great place to enjoy sticking your head out the hatch with a glass of scotch and watch the world go by under the fabulous spinnaker tower. Keep the VHF on ch 11 to listen to all the ship movements

In the morning, just tell the staff you hadn't realised how busy it was here in Haslar

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

Do not overlook The Royal Clarence Marina. It's a bit of a walk from Gosport but is well sheltered. It is also a long walk from the pontoons to the "facilities"

If the Castle is the pub near the Portsmouth/Gosport ferry then I can second what has been said about the grub!

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

I ate at the Castle on Sunday. Big Lamb roast. BIG

It used to be really nasty in there, but they have turned it around. Food is the best I have had in Gosport for a long time. In the Pub stakes that is.

Andy and Craig in Landers now have the reins, and are making a great effort to get this venue back to where it should be.

I wish them all the best.

I have tied up in the camber dock a couple of times, handy for Old Portsmouth and the fish markets, but you need a fender board.

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

I would go for Gosport marina over Haslar as a visitor every time. Haslar tend to stick you on the visitors pontoon by the lightship and the boats roll all night. The facilities are nicer and newer at Gosport too. The walk to the ferry is much the same.

The oriental restaurant on the front at Gunwharf is well recommended.

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

Do you mean Hornet Sailing Club at the top of Haslar Creek? Our club have been there as visitors in the past but we had to be sponsored by a member of the RNSA or JSSC. If you have the correct military connections it would probably be worth asking them. A good walk from the Gosport Ferry though.

Re: Visitor\'s berth near Gunwharf?

As Ken rightly says, if you ask you may be squeezed in away from the visitors pontoon. A,B or C pontoon's are furthest away from the Light ship.
