Visitor Berth Comparison

I agree with all the comments about Poole Harbour Commissioners...

The moment they built that comedy micro-marina at the end of the quay, it was obviously way too small, but no, they trumpeted 'no more berthing on the town quay, and we're somehow going to fit loads of locals too'.

Very quickly becoming 'well, overflow at busy times onto the town quay', and when I went there last a few years ago it was 'ok you're stuffed, the quay it is'.

There is a huge demand for a sensible marina in Poole, but it must not be controlled by PHC.

The only consolation is that eating out enjoyably at less than extraordinary prices in Poole, especially anywhere near the quay, is nigh on impossible !

You have to remember that there was enormous resistance, even to the Haven. The original plans were much bigger, but the usual combination of Nimbys and environmentalists fought to reduce it. The main driving force was to provide a safe haven for yachts, as the quay can be rough at times and provide berthing for the growing tripper boat trade. And you can now get boats like the Stavros Niarchos alongside - berthed just in time for the Torch last Friday.

There are proposals to significantly extend the Haven (or to build a new marina west of PYC) out for environmental assessment now, so probably won't happen for years.

You have to remember that PHC is a self financing trust that has to balance off conflicting demands from all kinds of stakeholders. The whole of the north shore of the harbour is either privately owned (not by PHC except for the docks) or public communal recreation space, so the only way it can expand facilities for yachts is by reclaiming land from the sea or enclosing sea areas. It is also struggling to cope with the drop off in cross channel trade and loss of the grain and steel trade which for years have provided the finance to support other activities such as dredging the channels and not charging for lying to your own hook as in many other popular harbours.

When comparing prices in Poole be very careful - make sure your quote includes VAT and harbour dues (also with VAT) and check whether shore power is thrown in. it's like buying new tyres for your car - does the quote include valves, balance, tracking and VAT - same rules apply they'll quote low and charge high if you don't check
