Just thought I'd mention the excellent service from these people. Downloaded their UK/Ireland chartset for Android over the weekend. Email registration is required to unlock the charts and ours went astray. As we had hoped to get to the boat yesterday afternoon we were quite keen to get the "license" email. Gave them a ring and had it in our hands within half an hour. Can't ask for much better.

What of the system? I hear you cry. Well we didn't make the boat but it seemed to work awfy well from the car along the local metrolops' seafront. We're using them a Nexus 7 with the "Marine Navigator" system.

So, in summary, £7.99 for the charts and £5.41 for the software gets you a basic colour high def. chartplotter. It'll also exchange waypoints/routes using the gpx protocol. What's not to like.

I feel a 10" tablet coming on:rolleyes:

I'm interested in this and thinking of going down this route, but have only just started looking. A couple of very basic questions if I may: I presume you're currently using this on a smart phone. If you get a tablet do you have to buy another copy of the software, or does the original purchase cover other devices? How can you tell if a prospective tablet has GPS built in? I've looked at Maplin's site and this is never mentioned in the specs. (Then again I got my first smart phone a few weeks ago and there was no GPS info. for any of the models on offer, but mine has it.)

Cheap Android tablets hardly ever have GPS. Even midrange Android tablets such as Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD do not have it.

Probably the cheapest decent quality tablet with GPS is the Google Nexus 7 - don't think many people regret buyying these.

Note that it is actually posssible to serve GPS position from an Android phone (with GPS) to an Android tablet (without GPS) using Wi-Fi. However this requires considerable messing about, with spectal appliactions on both devices, and there is a lot which can go wrong - may not be up to a "mision critical" navigation application.

Regards,

Rob

Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm currently using it on a Nexus 7 inch tablet, I believe the software can be installed on other devices. The charts are licensed for two devices only. Ten inch tablets with gps are available see here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-2-inch-Android-4-04-Tablet-PC-Flytouch-7-Superpad-16-GB-Memory-GPS-NEW-/221210663140?pt=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item33812ed8e4. No idea how good the display is though. The Nexus is superb but around twice the price for a 7" tablet. As I said in the original post its difficult to find fault at the price.

A word of caution - unbranded tablets might not have full access to Google Play Store.
Tabs from China/HK are not licensed for the Google apps library and while they may be fine for hundreds of games etc. they can't access apps like Navionics, Nautical Charts etc.
After months trying to get into the root of a chinese 10" tab I gave up the ghost and went for a Samsung.

I got the same for use on my lap top, it came with the cd two little wireless receivers and the gps unit
It works just fine and I worked my way along the coast. The most important times were when I anchored for the night a few times in a bit of a blow and I found the system showed any movement re anchor dragging which is perfect especially considering how cheap it is. They sell em on ebay I have to load the cd for it to work every time the gps quickly get's a fix
The gps unit charges from a usb lead and lasts ages I kept it in my cockpit, it also switches it's self off if not used
One of the usb receivers died but I'm very pleased
cheers
