The Vega club is holding a regatta at Harwich next year for all teh Vegas worldwide. I will be visiting (by car) the area today to meet RHYC and see whats what. WIll need ideas for visits for the non-boaty part of the regatta, we usually provide a day trip (in coaches) to a local attraction - any ideas?

We hope to have between 35 - 50 Vegas attending next year (start of July), two days of racing, and five days of fun.

DOnt know the East Coast so any advice would be appeciated.

Thorpness (model village) and Aldburgh are worth a coach trip, with a healthy walk along the beach (1 1/2 miles?) between them for those wanting to get rid of a hang over! All FOC, including the views! By sea go to Walton on the Naze, a gentle 2/3(max) hours sail at most, so a change for those who will have been passage making. The setting for Secret Water, Arthur Ransome tale. The whole area was written about by Maurice Griffiths including in particular, The Magic of the Swatchways. This book is still in publication and should be required reading for all your members who are attending the meet so they can read stories of the origins of pleasure yachting.

The obvious "tourist" attractions might be the NT at Sutton Hoo nr. Woodbridge (ancient ship burial site) or/and Flatford Mill (Constable country) and the medieval town of Dedham.

My wife and I had a season sailing in that area. She loved it because, when I was doing jobs on the boat, she was able to go off looking at famous gardens, of which there are many thereabouts. It may be a good idea to look up some of those for the less enthusiastic ladies - or, indeed, men.

I'd be hard pressed to list any but Beth Chatto's springs to mind. http://www.bethchatto.co.uk/

Good luck. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I see that you are visiting Harwich to day to go to the Royal Harwich Yacht Club. It is probably too late to tell you, but the RHYC is not at Harwich, it is up the Orwell just above Pin Mill, and a fine YC it is too.

I am a Local Yocal, and I can assure you that the suggestions (Beth Chatto, Sutton Hoo, Dedham, Flatford etc) all good.

If I can be of any help with local knowledge please PM me.

Who are the Albin Vega Club?

A nice sort of cross over boaty/non boaty trip as well, is to get everyone across to Harwich from Shotley on the foot ferry... its a little dinky thing that only carries a dozen or so people at a time, and Harwich is actually quite a pleasant little town with some very interesting history with things to see and do....
