Visa\'s

I ve just read 'welcome in OZ', this brings up a few things in my mind that have not been answered before.

How do you get a Visa for some where like Oz if you live aboard and are sailing there from; say Bali?

I can't belive that you would have to get a visa in London, how could send your passport half way round the world to get a visa, I expect you would need all your docs with you most of the time?

I'am not thinking about residing anywhere but spending maybe a year somewhere like Oz and possibly donig some pt work there.

Anybody experience of these issues?

Re: Visa\'s

I'm sure that there is an Ozzy consulate in Denpasar that would sort it for you.

Re: Visa\'s

As Forbsie says I am sure you will be able to get a visitors visa from a Aussie consulate. If you do this will most likely be for 6 months and will not entitle to you to work. If you want to get a residents visa you will have to enter a lenghty application process in your country of origin and fit the eligibilty requirements to succeed, young people can apply for a special 1 year visa allowing some work periods, rich people can get some sort of business visa . If you come on a visitors visa and expect to find cash work, I would say you will need to be extremely lucky to find any and would not rely on finding any to finance your visit.

Re: Visa\'s

As in all things, there's the theory and then what happens in practice.

My experience of Oz is that people are not so hide bound on obseving rules if they don't fit the circumstances. Whilst its true that you won't be able to get work for a large company and might find it difficult in a capital city, casual work for other businesses might not be too difficult to obtain. Especially if you are flexible and have a "Can do" attitude.

The essential thing is to have your visa. Don't do anything to attract the attention of the authorities, like trying to claim some kind of benefits, and go with the flow. Australia is not the UK on the other side of the world. They have a very different attitude to life and if you fit in with that, you will be ok.

Now watch the Meldrews get into that!

Yeh!

Thanks! I know Oz quite well I have been a couple of times and worked there before. We plan to live on savings/investments etc and my partners writting. The kind of work I have in mind is a bit or rigging here and there or teaching windsurfing/dinghies/diving on a 'few dollars for a days work' basis. Although I could imagine doing voluntry youth work if settled in a place for a while.

Also; thank you for the infomation about your co's advice, where abouts are you?
