Vire victim seeks help finding a second hand diese

As a long time sufferer at the hands of a temperamental 2-stroke Vire, I note that the sailing press does not seem to run articles on the maintenance and running of petrol engines such as the Vire - though there must still be a good few of us around! That being said I am thinking of a diesel replacement, but budget limitations mean it will have to be second hand. I am reluctant to swap one set of problems for someone else's, (eg an engine being sold because it's performance was below par as opposed to an engine which ran well but was replaced with something larger). Does anyone know of sources of re-conditioned engines perhaps even with some form of warranty? What is a reasonable price for second hand? The boat is an Arden 4 and I'm told a 10hp Yanmar fits perfectly, with no adjustment needed on shaft alignment and engine bearers. I'm a paper pusher not an engineer, so any advice or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Have a look at Ebay automotive then go boats, there is a 10hp diesel there.

Also try boatsandoutboards.com which has lots of items for saleand links to other sites. It could well be worth your while in going to Ask jeeves (ask.co.uk) and typing in marine engines and that will give several sites as well.

Would it not be easier and cheaper to fix the Vire?

I have a Vire 7 and it starts first time every time and has never let me down, other than impelor failure.
If you do replace it I may be interestedin buying the Vire for spares.
