Vinyl stripe above anti-fouling?

May seem like a really stupid question but....

...virtually every boat has a narrow vinyl stripe running around the hull just above the antifoul. Does this serve any purpose other than to confirm you're the right way up!!! It always get torn/damaged so just removed mine!

handy when you mask for your next antifoul and partially disguises the waterline shite mark.

It's called a "boot top" but usually comes as a paint, not strictly nessecary just gilding the Lilley
