not exclusively a mobo issue and definitely not an exciting one, but...
anyway since I can hardly move, I have lots of time to think and plan although I cannot even stay seated in front of the computer long enough...
My plan is to use VIMAR electrical stuff for the "wall" plugs and general switching.
Now, on the boat and particularly in the cabins, you mainly need a socket or two to charge mobiles, mp3/4s, cameras etc. Fortunately most of them are usb jobbies. So using my preferred series of VIMAR IDEA, in 6U assemblies, I can have ONE such for each cabin and have 2USBs, 2 6or10A 220V (of an inverter) and one 16A schuko (sp?) off the gennie/shore power.
I can get locally my 6-10-16A sockets, but not even the fcking VIMAR catalogue has an IDEA USB listed. I did find one company in the US providing them (check here) So first question, anyone aware of a place I could get them ahem, more locally? Vimar part # seems to be VM16368, but nowhere to be found???
Alternatively I was also thinking of adding a cigarette lighter socket in there, makes sense? I honestly think that the USB supersedes the lighter one but I may be missing something. Consider it or skip?
Finally, the most important issue is how do I drop the 24V to 5V???
Yes I know, a converter centrally and then wired to each socket but that means that the transformer of some sort in the converter will be live all the time burning juice for no reason whatsoever. I doubt there's something clever and I don't want to end up having to use a toggle switch with a tiny bulb to let me switch on and off each individual usb socket (and use a transformer behind each plug assembly!). Anything smarter?
cheers
