viewed sealine S28 and Targa29-decision made and more questions!

People are right the KAD32's is a much better and more powerful engine. It will drag the T29 to 38 knots. If that's what your after then good. The other engines are more than good enough as that was what the boat was designed for. Sure they will maybe only do 31 knots, but how often will you want to burn more fuel for the higher speeds.

If the price difference is enough to make the lower engines good value and the boat does what you want then go for it.

IMPORTANT!!! Whatever the engines, the most important thing is regular servicing, and well looked after engine, and more importantly engines that are regularly used in rivers and out to sea. An engine ran at 6 knots all its life will be a poor engine. Good luck.

Got to say this is correct but the compressors on kads deliver the power where it's needed the most, lower down the rev range, just on transition from displacement to planning, it makes one hell of a difference when fully loaded with fuel, water and gear.

The compressors kick out when the turbo's take over, so there is no sitting with a huge bow wave trying to pick up enough speed to overcome the wall of water, top end speed is only marginally better (170hp as opposed to 150hp for the ad's).

So it's not about top end.
If you enjoy watersports then I would def go for kad's, if you cruise light or dayboat AD's will do, if your plans are cruising further afield again I think the kad's are a better option, low speed (river) AD's would be better suited.

Resale, again the kad's, just think about the reason your asking in the first place, if everyone's recommending the kad's it will hold true when the time comes to sell.

MBM did a comparative test with ad's and Kad's on the targa 28/29 (used our boat for the kad test, back in Sept 2012 I think) where NB compared the two side by side and although the report suggests there is no real price premium advantage to kads they remain the preferred option.
I still have my copy if you want to read the report.

Most of our boating will be day boating, however the intention is to go further afield for short stays. Its usually only the two of us onboard and occasionally a couple of guests. Fuel would be kept to about half a tank most of the time. I should have the magazine article as I keep all the mags, will have to find it! I can see that KADs have the edge, would there be much difference in fuel consumption

Hi....just my two pence worth here!

Ex boat 3 boats ago, Fairline Corniche, Twin AD31A's on 280 outdrive's.....pffft....forget it!

Ex boat last year, Fairline Sprint with single AD31A on 290 outdrive....great with clean bum, dirty bum?....run up front to get her over the hump!

By choice having never owned a boat with KAD's......unless you can dream up a way of spinning the turbo on an AD31 at sub 2500 rpm...Go for a KAD equipped boat.

FP (S28, twin KAD32) uses somewhere between 40-45 litres per hour at a fast cruise.
Variables are sea state, load, and whether the hull and props are clean or covered in shellfish and sea cabbage.

Performance is "enough" :) No delay planing, even when loaded up, and 34kts flat out on a good day.
A previous S24 with an AD31 took longer to plane: it would reach a respectable 30kts+, but took many seconds longer to wind the turbos up before it really got going properly, and cruise rpms were always that bit higher.
KAD32 has the Kompressor to provide a substantial extra push from 1500rpm to 2500rpm.
