Well the weather in Devon has been rubbish today, but managed two viewings, Sealine S28 in Brixham and a Fairline Targa 29 in Dartmouth. We have decided that the S28 layout works best for us, so I think we will be going down this route. The S28 was the best we have seen, but it did have the AD31 engines (which appeared to be immaculate) however, when the broker started the engines the starboard battery warning light was on and the tacho wasnt working- any ideas on the likely cause? Would these engines be a significantly worse option than one powered by KAD 32s?

Did he rev up the engine? Tachos on pre electronic diesels commonly read alternator pulses so before the alternator begins to charge (light out), the tacho gets no signal. Often need a swift raise in rpm to begin charging

yes, he did rev it but it made no difference. The voltmeter didnt drop, the broker thought it could be a slipping belt or alternator issue.

it may also be the connector from the alternator to the tacho. good choice by the way, the S28 is a cracking boat for use of available space in its class

I am sure the owner would sort this issue out, but the main sticking point for me is the engine choice. Mosyt of the boats in the age/price bracket I am looking at seem to have the AD31, but the general consensus seems to suggest the KAD 32 would be a better option....more advice needed!! Gary, I will be picking your brains in the near future

IMHO hold out for Kad's, there are plenty of s28's out there, either that or take the underpowered ad31's but make sure this is reflected in the price.

If you can, get a sea trial with the ad31's before you make your mind up, if you want to know what the kad's are like come and have a trip on our T28.

We are onboard at the moment but as you say weather is not great for boating today and have no plans for a trip out tomorrow.
Were back at the end of the month however so if your still undecided we may be able to fix a demo day then.

Have a look at this S28 - http://wales.boatshed.com/sealine_s28-boat-127500.html

It has the KAD engines and a fairly recent canopy. Reduced this summer from 49k to 39k. I'm surprised its still for sale as it looks a tidy boat.

Have seen the engines running recently but maybe there is a more underlying issue thats not obvious? Could be worth a call to Mike at boatshed Wales to find out.

Sorry Ian, but that one looks very dated to me, awful upholstery, no radar, no teak to the cockpit, dated nav equipment in general and some of the photos to be honest, don't appear to show it as a tidy boat at all e.g. brown expansion tanks for the coolant is smething to check out, the teak on the swim platform looks tired too, rust in the anchor locker etc. There's plenty of other S28's out there that admittedly cost more but they'll be several years younger with more options sold within the price

Hi Gary, fully appreciate what your saying but the OP has said in #7 that their price and age criteria is limiting to the older AD engines so figured that this one could be a contender, yes its not got the best spec but the price seems good. Of course there could be underlying issues which reflects the lack of interest but the broker should be able to answer this.

Enterprise, we are coming into Torquay tomorrow, would be useful if I could come along for a chat if possible. Which berth are you on? Of the boats we have seen wifey prefers the white wood grain veneer on the interior. This seems to be more available on the older models? I agree with what has been said about some of the interior fabrics- some dont do the boat any favours! I dont mind sorting out minor refurbishment projects, and may even consider a boat requiring re-upholstery (if the price is right) My DIY skills are above average, but unfortunatly they do not extend to the oily things under the floor and sticking out the back so mechanically sound engines and drives are the top priority.

Andy, dont think we wil get in much before lunchtime. Will pop over just in case you are about, if not will catch up to when you are back down.

No problem, were leaving around 12ish, (got to pick up an ebay purchase on the way home so already committed), but your more than welcome any time, will PM you the dates when were back again later.

Cheers
Andy & Mandy

Now that ad / boat is a classic example of a boat that needs to be seen. It's difficult to see if it's a dog or one that's just a bit grubby and cosmetically tired. Could be that a decent professional clean and re upholster could make it into a very nice example (shame about the tacky walnut wood though).

Have you actually had any sea trials with either of these two boats.Would really really try out both boats before you hand over any cash.
Act in haste repent at leisure !
A boat that you will enjoy actually using is far better for long term satisfaction than some impressive marina queen which fast loses it attraction when your wife after few trips out prefers it when you remain tied up.

I know what you are saying, but the S28 ticked more boxes for us than the T29 for what we will be using her for .After owning my Drago 600 with outboard for the last three seasons anything is going to handle well! The main sticking point at the moment is still the choice of engines.

Good luck whatever you choose.

People are right the KAD32's is a much better and more powerful engine. It will drag the T29 to 38 knots. If that's what your after then good. The other engines are more than good enough as that was what the boat was designed for. Sure they will maybe only do 31 knots, but how often will you want to burn more fuel for the higher speeds.

If the price difference is enough to make the lower engines good value and the boat does what you want then go for it.

IMPORTANT!!! Whatever the engines, the most important thing is regular servicing, and well looked after engine, and more importantly engines that are regularly used in rivers and out to sea. An engine ran at 6 knots all its life will be a poor engine. Good luck.
