Video: J-Class boats sailing the St Barts Bucket

No life jackets maybe but that's why they have all those chase boats...either to pluck the crew out the water or to take the owners dog to the beach for a pee...

How do J-s get from one venue to the next: do they actually sail, motor or are they carried as freight on ships?

I think that most (if not all) of them usually do the ocean crossings on their own bottoms - when we arrived in Horta on Idea almost a year ago, we took over a berth that Endeavour had just vacated a few hours earlier.
And I have been following some of them on AIS on MarineTraffic - they were all out in the Caribbean for the winter (incl the Bucket), and most have just recently passed through the Azores.

They do batten down severely for passages - the guardrails around the gunwhale are re-installed, and I think they use much smaller, more bullet proof cruising sails. I saw Ranger in Antigua a couple of years ago getting ready for heading back to the Med, and I am sure she also had storm shutters on the windows in her deckhouse.
