Always Julie,

I have an Icom hand held and a friend a similar model but with shared buttons for functions.

On mine, if I set the squelch to just 1 other vessels cannot be heard and my friends one cannot squelch out even channel 16 on its highest squelch setting.
Has anyone else experienced these sort of problems with Icoms', both are fairly new as in one is less than a year old!

Yup, I have three of the little critters and experience exactly that problem often. My collection is two of a certain model (M33 rings a bell) and one of another model. All have been bought 2011 or later and are small handhelds. I know people rave about Icom but I think they're somewhat at the junk end of things and I'd never buy one as my main radio

Yup I have almost come to that conclusion. They promote themselves as a market leader in quality and market share but in my experience, they're pretty expensive and no better than anything at the budget end. I'm sure they are made in the same factory as Cobra and other CB radios'. :ambivalence:

Thats interesting I have an ICOM handheld from 2006 and its excellent, had two fixed station dsc units and better than anything I've used since. Maybe new subcontractor building them at a cheaper price. Re squelch issues if they are fixed units check out your aerial wiring and connectors. It needs to be spot on or the signal will reflect back into the radio rather than transmit, or incoming signal will not be received.

Thanks Pete, I had one on my Targa as recommended here and true to its word was excellent all round.

I've just fitted and M-Tech with second station to the Azi and believe it or not, it's even better!

I actually checked my Raymarine 55e 2 weeks ago & yes didnt work with the squelch turned up---only worked in "noisey" mode. Had to be sent back to Raymarine as the interweb seemed to think it was a common fault. Cost be nearly the price of a new one, but as I had a extn up top had to bite the bullet. !!!!

If you only have one fixed vhf then its just for looks - or possibly in the past there was another vhf unit. might be worth finding the end of the cable on the spare one - might be handy if the working one gets damaged.

I've had 4 ICOM handhelds and never experienced the issue described by the RogerRat. I chose ICOM because I wanted full electronic control i.e. no variable resistor on / off / volume switches and the like. Cost was reasonable, especially given the good reviews it's had. I tried Standard Horizon and Silva but did not like them and quickly got rid of both. The Silva S10 in particular, I felt, was rubbish - for example when switching it on you'd hear a click as voltage was being applied across the speaker.

Instead of whinging about your ICOM radio if it isn't working properly, why not contact ICOM? The radio that came with our boat stopped receiving for no apparent reason. We later heard that ICOM had unfortunately received a defective batch of components, although we can't verify the truth of that. ICOM fixed it for free, no questions, within a few days despite the fact it was well out of warranty. Electronics go wrong; it's a fact of life in thanks to the miserable existence they have in a boat, so stirling customer service is worth a lot to me.

And no, I don't work for them!
