VHF Transmitting but not Receiving

When you fitted the new connector you could have snagged a single strand of the centre core as you pushed it through the centre pin of the PL259. I find this is the most common problem with fitting a PL259. Unfortunately you can't check that connector with a multimeter because, being attached to the antenna, it will show a short anyway. You'll need to do it visually. You can check for a short in the connectors downstream with a multimeter but my prime suspect would be the new plug because, presumably, nothing else has changed.

Or from where he is - just call Chi Marina or Chichester Harbour Launch - but only if it's quiet!!

Did that legitimately on Sunday as I needed a lift back from my mooring so called Emsworth Mobile on ch14. Again, Sid received the message fine but I could only hear his response on the HH, which I had switched on by then suspecting I'd have the same problem.

I'll be soldering at the weekend I feel.:(

Might just be the microphone that's not outputing voice.
If you operate the PTT button do you get carrier on the handheld?
If they are close together you should also get the feedback howl.
( try PTT on the handheld and hear if you get the howl on the fixed to help prove if its voice or carrier that's the problem).

If it's the microphone might be a broken wire in the cord or the actual microphone inset. Maplins sell the inset for a few quid if you are VERY good with the soldering bolt.
You might just guess that I've been down this road and got the inset!

If I PTT on either HH or fixed set with them in close proximity I get the tell-tale "click" on the speaker of the other. My fixed set also has a speaker on the front panel so thankfully I don't have to challenge my soldering skills just yet! (Although GEC Marconi spent a fortune back in the 80's making sure my skills were up to NASA standards!)

Was it working OK before you added the new plug?

If so, unplug at the mast base and the radio, then meter the cable at the radio -it should not show a short. If it does it is probably the new socket, but don't ignore the possibility of a coincidental problem at the radio end. You should meter for continuity end-to-end on both braid and inner as well. (get someone to short the other end while you watch the meter)
If that cable assembly rings clear, it's time to investigate the new plug on the mast tail. This has to be done physically because as already mentioned the aerial will probably present a DC short to the cable and confuse meter readings.
Good hunting.

From what you've told us - transmitting well, receiving poorly - I doubt if it is a short. Wouldn't that lead to no Tx or Rx (and a fried set pretty quickly!)

Sounds to me more like a poorly made joint in the new connector or corrosion on one of the pins. Check the deck socket. Also check the socket on the set as water has been known to run right down coax cables - that's what the air space is for, innit?
