can any kind chap put me in touch with anyone who could sell me a cheap vhf radio.i've got a small boat on the broads and i just want something to learn on.

Look at what eBay.co.uk has to offer - type in vhf in the search and you'll come up with a few. Carefull, though, some are quite ancient!

thought of trying a new/cheap hand-held? Should give you everything you want but without the full range of a fixed set. And it wouldn't be redundant if you wanted to upgrade to a fixed set later.

It all depends on your budget but you can pick up some bargain Icom handhelds for around £120, or Nasa offer a DSC Fixed VHF/DSC unit for £199.

I wouldn't buy a second hand one except maybe just maybe from someone you know and TRUST - you never quite know where the thing has been or why they are really selling it. Let's face it, your life might depend on it working the one time you really need it to work - I wouldn't risk it by buying from someone I didn't know.
