can any kind chap put me in touch with anyone who could sell me a cheap startup vhf radio.i've got a small boat on the broads and i just whant something simple to learn on.

Worth remembering that to fix a radio to a vessel requires an equipment licence and to operate the equipment you need an operators certificate. Conviction of either of the above may result in hefty fines. Contact the RYA. You'll get all the learning and practice you need, and a licence.

Also try eBay.co.uk - often a few secondhand ones for sale, but beware that some of them are very old. Also try your local marine electronic place and see if they have any ones thet have been replaced by DSC sets.
