I have a Simrad RS80 VHF with two plug in handsets. There are "curly cord" cables between the handsets and the plugs. One is working perfectly and the loudspeaker is inoperative in the other. The "curly cords" are working but very tatty. Replacing the cables is a first priority. Simrad have no spares but presumable any black "curly cord" with 8 interior cables could be soldered on by a good electrician who does not double his price at the sound of marine. Does anybody know one in the UK, please?

If not doing it myself (I'd have to take a look at the size of the contacts to determine if I was brave enough) I'd contact my local ham radio club(s).

It's a very common problem. Simrad say that they had a defective batch of cable but I wonder if it was a self destruct ploy to make us buy a new radio. When I phoned Simrad they said just call in to my local service centre and they would supply a new one free of charge. Not able to post they said.
Nearest service centre was Stockholm!

I had the same problem with a Skanti. I've wrapped it with self-amalgamating tape after being rejected by repairers. It's not pretty but it should last a year or two.

I am having the same problem with a Skanti. Trying a solution with heat shrink shield. Will not be pretty but will hopefully work for a couple of years

I have the same issue.

Several suppliers in the UK like RS components and E-Bay

Thanks Roger,

I too have the same issue, ICOM HF mike cable. I've lacked incentive, I can live with what look like a rat gnawed cable - you have given me no excuse.

As usual you have come up with a well researched (and based on past experience) reliable answer - though I may contact ICOM first.

Thanks, I can send it to you early in May when I return to the UK. I also have the service manual with wiring diagrams that I could e mail to you. What would it cost and how long would it take, please?

Thanks for all your replies. Incidentally, I tried heatshrink, but it shrank irregularly, was too rigid and looked awful. Wrapping with curly wire conduit was a little better, but still looked pretty poor.
