VHF PTT button doesn't work - fixable?

Just noticed that the Press To Talk button on one of my Simrad RS82 handsets doesn't move when I press it so I can't transmit from the cockpit which is a bit of a pain.

Before I start taking the handset apart, is there a realistic chance of fixing this?

Thanks

Usually with the help of components from Maplins etc.

We had that problem and I took the handset apart and found a broken wire, I think caused by flexing. I cut the wire back and re-soldered. It's worth a look but might be something else.

did the button move before? if there's a physical problem - jammed button - that's different to an electronic problem of a faulty switch. my ptt button is simply a rubber cover over a small switch not a 'press button' as such. take it apart - what do you have to lose? its not working and these problems are usually a lot simpler than you think they will be

I meant to add a broken wire can occur a few inches from the handset. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the live and neutral wires and the fuse. If the reading is zero then a wire is broken. Cut it back until you get a reading.

My setup is pretty much the same - a rubber cover over a micro switch, I took the handset apart this morning and the switch had become detached from the circuit board. The switch seems to physically work OK so hopefully it is simple case of soldering it back on!

Many thanks to everybody that has contributed to this thread.
