An old subject I'm sure but help gratefully recieved. My Icom 601 with remote command mike came with recently acquired boat. Initially the remote mike seemed to work . That has completely stopped now. Also ,using the hand mike attached to the unit it seems from reports from friends that it works at close range but not at any distance -over say 200metre that is! hi or low power no apparant difference

I appear to be hearing all other conversations etc.At present my hand held is better. I've cleaned the aerial connection and also mike and remote mike connections.

Any ideas please!

Sound like either a duff arial or the output transistors are blown. If you can get hold of an SWR meter you can check the arial or try fitting another arial to see if it cures the problem. If its a unit fault should be worth repairing but its not a DIY job

Have you checked all the joins in the antenna? We had a bad join under our mast ... quickly sorted out with a soldering iron (and I'm glad we've got an inverter onboard!)

Seems like you may have two seperate issues:

1) the remote mic, obviously check all connections on that etc for corrosion.
2) The range; sounds like classic aerial / coax issue. Only way to properley test this is with a SWR meter, although of course you can visually check for any obvious problems.

Good luck :)

I have just been asked the same problem with the remote mike on the village hall, which has stopped working.
The reason was simple the 9 volt battery was down to 5.8 volts and knackered.
Does your remote have a battery? - start there first
