I'm in the market for an ICOM IC-M401EURO fixed VHF. The best price I've seen is £167.62ex VAT + £15.99 delivery to sunny Guernsey from Cactus Navigation.

Does anyone no of other sources? online chandlers etc that might be competitive on price?

TIA

Why does it get so complicated

Had a look at Westmarine.com and they have an IC-402 which is a DSC model at less than the UK price for the IC-401 (there's a suprise)

Does anyone know if this is US specific? one of my handhelds is a US model which works fine but defaults to the US frequencies requiring an extra button press each time its powered up.

I'm also slightly concerned about having the DSC on the radio as its gonna be just the right height for bored little fingers to press the nice red button (que helicopters, lifeboats, etc, etc)

The main reason for choosing the 401 is lack of space, it's the smallest one I've found so far.

Have you looked at the Simrad RD68? That's nice and small - similar size to a car radio. It requires two fingers to push the little red button and you have to hold it in for longer than 5 seconds (don't know if the Icom one has a similar feature)

Yep looked at most of them I suspect, unfortunately we are really tight on space. even the ICOM will require a bit of cable re-routing behind the panel.

Have you actually bought anything from westmarine?

Have you looked at the NASA SX35, nice and small and seems to have all the features for DSC and only £188 on ybw at the moment!!

The NASA looks good and is roughly the same dimensions as the ICOM but seems to be about 20mm deeper which means it will catch on a fancy moulding bit in the panel.

Hmmm maybe I need a bigger hammer

Thanks for the input

Yes and the service was excellent. I've spent nearly US$5000 with them and if I'd purchased the same goods in the UK, I would have spent nearly £5000. Nuff said.

Re: Why does it get so complicated

Actually the ybw and Compass 24 web sites list the SX35 on Special at £189.95, which was why we went to £188.95 for a VERY limited period this morning. It's a crazy price to get stuck in.

Re: Why does it get so complicated

Thats a bugger I've just ordered one, but they are also offering £5 off for on line ordering!!! So that makes it £184.95!!!! My local chandlers didn't believe me when I told them and had to show them a print out from the web cos they thought I was bulling, they claim they can't buy them or that price.

Just look at the top of the menu here and you'll see shopping link, then click on YBW-Marine Store and you'll see they've got £5 off all online orders....

Re: Why does it get so complicated

My information was that they hadn't ordered any, so all I can say about my being £4 more expensive is that at least you'll get it in the morning!

Agree. And he's got a seriously hot daughter. Pity I am just one week too old for her.

Re: Why does it get so complicated

I just had it from a close source that they hadn't ordered any, and considering the price one would have expected them to stock for a deal like that.

Anyway it's an appalling deal whoever you get it from, I'm in tears everytime I sell one, but either I'm going to play with the big boys or I ain't. I've sold seven today though which is pretty amazing.

I don't blame anyone for going where the best deal is.
