I've ordered online a SH VHF .Got an email with a delivery date for the 26th of last month.Since it didn't arrive I called them today only to be told they didn't have them in stock and I'd have to wait another two to three weeks. They offered me a discount on the next model up but I'm not keen on spending the extra money.I'm not happy that they didn't bother to warn me.Should I take their discount offer or ask for a refund and go elsewhere?

Where from? If it was MarineMEGAStore I'd just kiss the money goodbye and buy from MarineSUPERstore who would send it to you within 2 days.

I'd ask for a refund and go elsewhere but if the shop has a good rep give them a chance as they may be genuine.

Not fair.

Megastore could not supply me with ?? and returned my money on request.

It would be preferable if all internet companies debited customer accounts prior to delivery, not on order received.

You were lucky. After many, many attempts over several weeks, I gave up trying to contact them via their utterly pathetic phone and livechat facilities and went into their office in Hamble in person. I made it quite clear that I wouldn't be leaving until my account had been credited in respect of the undelivered items. That got it done.

I bought a Standard Horizon from MES (aka Cactus) a few months ago. I too had a couple of weeks' delay, though they did send me a badly-written email informing me of the fact. Since the boat was then still in Desty's shed being painted I wasn't too bothered but I did think they might have mentioned it on their site.

I've bought various bits from them over the last couple of years, and probably would again, but would be wary if I was up against a deadline.

When doing the purchase I noticed that their site was unnacceptably slow and told them so by email.Got a quick reply saying that they'd been doing some upgrades and was it better now.

Read these words carefully, you decide?

Two of the UK’s leading marine electronics resellers, Bristol and Poole based Marine Electronic Services (MES) and London and Bristol based Cactus Navigation and Communication have been sold to a new venture backed by Vigo FI SL for an undisclosed sum.

Prism Corporate Broking, specialists in facilitating marine related mergers and acquisitions, acted on behalf of MES and introduced them to investors Vigo FI SL, this resulted in the sale of MES who is now owned, along with Cactus Navigation and Communication, by a new holding company called Cactus 020 Ltd. Both MES and Cactus are strong within the marine electronics sector servicing over 80,000 customers with their complete sales, installation and support packages.

Also included in the sale is the trade distributor, Navigate Marine Distribution and Raydirect, an internet business.

The new holding company is headed up by Andrew Smythe, who was previously a director of Cactus Navigation and Communications and remains an equity partner in the new venture.
“Adjusting to the rapidly changing business environment and providing a better service to our customers is a driving factor for the sale,” said Mr Smythe. “Now we have the resources and expertise of Vigo on board we can adapt to the changing market and drive the company forward with a series of radical plans that include a total restructure of the supply chain, further acquisitions, and a move into the outdoor leisure, diving and fishing markets.”

Prism Corporate Broking’s Managing Director, Peter Watson worked with MES during the sale, he adds, “In a market where trade is difficult, it is excellent to bring about a business transaction that directly achieves the aims of both parties. We are pleased with the result and look forward to hearing about the future successes of Cactus 020.”

Cactus 020 is projecting revenues of over $10m this year.

I think it's perfectly fair given the enormous quantity of negative feedback they have on these forums, and what I said is in line with the majority of experiences. There are exceptions who get good service but only 2-3 a year.

Under Distance Selling Regulations they have exceeded the timescale by which goods are required to be shipped/delivered. You are within your rights to request a refund of your monies and they are obliged to return your money within 28 days.

Worthwhile pointing out to them that it is in their interest to return your money promptly or you will hit them with this:
