I have succesfully got my VHF licence via the online application system.

It totally rejected the old callsign from the licence that lapsed several years ago so I have ended up with a new one.

It would be a big undersatatement to say that it was not easy. Not being registered I do not have a "gross tonnage" figure but it was a mandatory field so I put in the displacement but the biggest hurdle seemed to be finding what to do once the application form was completed, at least it was for me. Even now I could not advise some else on what to do. However I got there in the end but it was the most difficult thing i have done on line. Even worse than paying my telephone bill on line.

I got a free licence so the system does work, it did what it said on the tin.

I am totally defeated by what to do once the form has been completed - I have had to give up until I can find time to call Ofcom during the day - and I thought I was part of the Playstation Generation!

I am still waiting for my password by post

[/ QUOTE ] I applied for mine late on saturday (2 Dec) and it arrived yesterday, Tue 12 Dec.

But it is your <u>user name</u> that is coming. You have already entered a password (Upper case + lowercase + numerals) I hope you made a note of it!

My "new" username arrived. It was all in capitals. When I rang them to say that I couldnt log in they said that the first letter is a capital and the remainder lower case, the info on the letter was an error.

[/ QUOTE ] Quite it took me several hours to get beyond that point!

I have had another look at it this morning and gone over it again with an application for a "T" licence number although I cancelled it at the last moment as I don't actually want one.

For the benefit of anyone struggling with the beginning bits:

>Click on "Ship licences" in the "View licences" box
>Click on " Apply" for either a "Ships Portable Radio Licence" for a "T" number or other equipment <u>not</u> licenced to a particular vessel, or a "Ships radio licence" for a fixed radio or other equipment to be licenced to a particular vessel, including normal (non"T") portables.
>Click "Continue application"
>Click "Add licence details"
>Now complete all mandatory fields on the form. Use your displacement if you do not have a Gross tonnage figure. Enter the quantity and click "Add item" for each type of equipment you have to include in the licence.
There are 9 pages for a Ships Radio licence but only 3 for a portable ("T") licence

NOW when you have got all 9 (or3) pages complete

>Click "Save licence details"
>In the next window click "Continue application"
> In the "Select mailing address" window click on "Select" (or "New" if you want to put in a new address)
> Click on "Accept licence"

It should be straightforward from here on but at first I had difficulty with agreeing to the terms. There may be a time delay or it may make you scroll all through them before it allows you to accept them.

Best idea is to save the licence to your PC and print it later, I think. That way you can print a duplicate/replacement at any time without going into the Ofcom site.

The licence is 13 pages long so you might want to print the odd pages first and then the even pages on the backs of them.

I hope this helps but I am still not guaranteeing 100% accuracy.

The procedure is only for NEW licences. If you want to resurrect an old callsign from an expired licence you will have to make a postal application and pay £20. I'm not sure what will happen if you answer "yes" to the question about a previous licence and enter the callsign if it is only recently expired and still on the data base. It just rejects very old ones that are no longer on the data base.

Make sure you keep your user name and password safe and secure in case you need to make any additions or amendments in the future or indeed apply for a licence for your new boat. Remember these licences are not transferaable to new owners or to new boats.

now if only I could remember my password password

[/ QUOTE ] There is a "forgotten my password" facility IIRC

[/ QUOTE ] I've now tried it in all lowercase. that works equally well so conclude that the user ID is not case sensitive!

The password won't be though. Use the "Ive forgotten my password" facility to check you have got that correct.

I suggest that anyone who finds the procedure as difficult and user unfriendly as i did should email ther comments, highlighting the areas causing most problems, to Ofcom at: licensingcentre@ofcom.org.uk

I probably have my licence cancelled for my trouble!

You've broken the system, what did you do to it?

"Due to essential maintenance, the online licensing service will be unavailable between 6pm on Wednesday 13 December and 9am on Thursday 14 December 2006.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The system is probably overwhelmed by the "amazing"number of people claiming to be fitt ing VHFfor the first time in december 06.Im going to wait uintill after Xmas to fit my "new"VHF /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Perhaps they have read my email. It was not very complimentary!

As an IT man, it never fails to amuse me that anything procured for any .gov.uk organisation has every wheel and spoke re-invented! There are plenty of off-the-shelf registration packages, but, no..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

[/ QUOTE ] This one appears to come from Siebel eSales. I dont know who they are but as an IT man you no doubt do.
