VHF gripes - more ..

I get confused by this as I don't know which one is the nearest/best for me. I revert to the Boatie app.

It will be the one you hear the announcement best from. The announcements reflect the furthest transmissions - for example, Needles (Isle of Wight) and Beer Head (Devon). There will be little crossover between that pair, so if you hear that announcement more clearly than you hear the Portland / Lee on Solent one, change to the announced channel.

Its not an exact science, but feedback has been that it's better than previously.

If you're in doubt, you can always set the relevant channels for your cruising area into your scan sequence, then just select the best heard version.

Ah, but Russell's cruising area is "everywhere" :)

His boat is on a trailer, and he travels from Scotland to Brittany to Wales at seemingly a moment's notice. I'm rather jealous to be honest :)

In the Solent, though, there's no particular need to hear the Coastguard's broadcast anyway. There's good mobile phone signal throughout, so you can instantly download the current Inshore Waters direct from the Met Office whenever you like.

Well, considering nationwide, the MSI channels are 23, 84, 86 and in some places 10, the scan programming shouldn't be too arduous!

There is a comprehensive map of all the transmitters and channels in the Almanac. No wonder everyone on here thinks £30 for a big book of info is expensive - no one ever bloody reads it!
