I'm not really interested in past producers, the list would explode and I'm not sure it would add much value (certainly not for my purposes).

To be honest I'm not really sure what the purpose is anyway

If you want a good VHF, get Standard Horizon or Icom. If you're on a budget, look at Cobra. If you just want the absolute cheapest then I believe Midland are it.

Most of the others are a sideshow.

The original purpose was to review all the kit out there to see whether any manufacturer produces a combined VHF / AIS transponder. The result is that there are plenty of VHFs with AIS receivers, but none with transponders (yet).

Will have to disagree with you there Pete. The Entry level Midland is at least a functional and competent radio, The entry level Cobra should have Buzz Lightyear printed on the casing and sold in pairs to 5yr olds... (Just my personal experience!)

I once had reason to want to buy the cheapest VHF transceiver available and, at least at that time, a Midland handheld had that honour. Nothing to do with quality.

It was notable as one of the few handhelds still available which aren't waterproof, though.

Yup, I had one too, to replace my Cobra H/H 125 (also not waterproof) which couldn't even contact the coastguard from sitting in the Beauly Firth!! I wouldn't say the Midland was amazing, but it was at least competent and fit for purpose, and yes, I did keep it in a waterproof pouch at all times....
