There's even a standard NMEA sentence to do that between different manufacturers' kit, but sadly not all plotters send it nor all radios understand, so only some combinations work. Vesper AIS displays send it, and Vesper used to maintain a published list of radios known to understand it.

Yes,

I got fed up with all the fannying about and fitted a Vesper 850 plus a new Icom VHF radio, it has the facility to directly trouble an AIS target via VHF.

I am unlikely ever to use it but the combo offers an alternative way forward.

To be fair it's not very clear.

I'm really interested in the 6500 rather then a seperate AIS and GPS unit (I know the whole if it breaks, it all goes argument). I do hope they sort out the approval, it would be a great bit of kit.
