Odd sort of reception.
First time out this season, Vhf complete with new professionally fitted aerial receives all stations with very good clarity, except, instructions received from a handheld at the shoreside on 37.
With this there was an embarrassing number of requests to say again as the transmission broke up with about a third of each message lost. In the middle of a sentence the sound would suddenly break into a crackle almost like an un-squelched noise but not as loud. Fiddling with squelch or volume had no effect.
Apparently other boats were receiving ok apart from one other.
IS it my set or his and what to do?

Maybe the other stations were closer to the hand held and the hand held was on low power. How far away were you and were there any metal or other structures between you and the handheld?

I've had a similar situation with a handheld and fixed set capturing each other, even though both were only receiving! The fixed set was on scan and I was talking to the marina on th hh from the foredeck to get away from engine noise. Presumably the reception was OK until the scan found the active channel and locked onto the transmission. On that basis, you can't judge the efficacity of the antenna installation whilst in close proximity to other active stations.

You've answered your own question -everything is OK except one, the faulty one. Handheld or not, it is the only one with a problem... Maybe it's misuse by operator, low power, low battery, operating from a tin shed or whatever, but it's not your problem. Tell them to investigate if it's important to normal operation.

That's what I'd like to think but it seems the rest of the fleet heard OK, except one that I know of.

The distance varied from perhaps 300 metres to a mile with little difference in the reception.
