Just to say I've now done the VHF course and am now legal :). Have to say it was well worth it imo. The 6 hours (ish) flew by because, aside from being obviously informative, it was a good laugh aswell tbh. We covered every possible scenario from the 'serious must know stuff' to the 'not essential but good to be aware of' bits. Much of it is common sense of course but good to know the correct protocol eh?! Desperately wanted to say 'Roger' but resisted that tempatation; also resisted saying 'Fluffy' when momentarily forgetting my phonetic alphabet!!
All in all, a good day and I recommend it to anyone thinking about doing it 'at some point'.
Thanx to Julie at Mendez who made it really enjoyable.

Hi Lisilou. Congrats! Where did you get it done and how much did it cost. I am thinking of doing it through the winter months.
Thanks
Tim.

Hi Tim. Sorry, thread lost downstream a bit so missed ur reply. Thanks and did it at Mendez Marine. Julie (Powerskipper on here) ran it and she's great so I can thoroughly recommend them to you. Of course there are other equally reputable places (have to be a bit PC I s'pose :).) tel: 01489 588977 Hamble River Boat Yard, Bridge Road, Swanwick, Southampton SO31 7EB. £99 for 6 hr course + £30 on the day for the licence.
Hope you enjoy yours :)

Nice to see and have a chat , and thanks for the feed back.

glad you had a well run course, ours was a shambles, instructors disagreeing with each other to the verge of having a domestic (they were a couple), dictatorial "thou shall not speak when we are" and very very dry, he was clearly frustrated when some got it wrong in the role play.

I now know why it only cost 50 quid a head.

Anyways, less of that, well done on getting it sorted:cool:

Now I understand your post a while back (think it was you anyway) when you did yours. When I read that, I must admit I was thinking doing it maybe a waste of time and dosh but you obviously had naff people running it which is a real shame Gary coz mine was great fun. Just goes to show that there are instructors and then there are GOOD instructors. Makes a huge difference. Wish I'd been a fly on the wall at yours tho :D.

it was a classic :D at one point the lady instructor was pushing the buttons to go through a slideset and it came to a slide with annimation and music.. the man instructor was trying to get across the ins and outs of how a signal traverses the earth (we'd got the gist 10mins earlier) and he kept casting a glance at her giving some really stern looks.. after 5 mins of this, I stood up and offered my help to kill the volume as she was clearly struggling and embarassed... she flattly refused, almost an indignant pride thing... really was a bit of a joke but we did get what we needed from it in the end and are better on the radio for it, just wasn't very enjoyable

Thanks Lisa. I'm down in deepest Pembrokeshire and have found a few places locally who charge the same price as you paid. Found one that was a lot cheaper and was wondering if it was the couple that Gay went to.
That might be worth booking just for a laugh!
I'll let you all know once i've done it.
Cheers
Tim.
