My VHF has been in the drawer for a couple months.

The battery is totally flat.

Got it out and put it in the charger.

The indicator light on the charger will not come on.

Any suggestions?

I'm no expert, but a mutimeter on the terminals of the charger should tell you if it is kicking out the 7.2 Volts (or thereabouts) when the radio is not inserted - that'll tell you something at least (i.e. that the charger is working up to that point).

Clean all the connections in the radio docking station., remove the battery and clean the battery terminals and the radio to battery connections.

A lot of chargers will not charge a completely flat battery as they need a bit of voltage from the battery to know a battery is plugged in. Chicken and egg.

[/ QUOTE ] I had lightly cleaned the battery terminals, but following your suggestion I actually scraped the surface. After all if it was knackered , no harm done.

Lo and behold, the red light on the charging base is now on.

Fingers crossed that it actually charges. Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The problem I think is that certain batteries develop a 'memory'after a while.

It is best to allow the battery to run down almost to nothing then charge it up rather than sticking it back on the charger after each time you use it.

Eventually (depending on the type of battery) the battery will develop a memory of the time between charges and will start to only hold a charge for that length of time.

Then you can post it to me so I can fix it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Sorry, it works perfectly now.

Amazing how 'clean' electrical contacts need to be.
