i have just bought a "banten" marine antenna(whip) and was wondering if anyone knows if i can make sure the antenna is is ok to use before i fit it?i have fitted the coax and when i put a put a tester on the whip itself to the inner core or to the mount i get a sound . i no nothing about what is correct or not so any help would be usefull.

Why not just connect it temporarily (prop it up on deck) and do a radio check (preferably to a local marina or another boat, but the CoastGuard won't really mind).?? Yes, your meter will indicate a low resistance ('short circuit').

Had exactly the same problem last year. No way round it except to do a temporary rig-up as suggested and try it. Course you then have to un-make the connections to fit it to the mast so you still don't know if it's going to work....................
