VHF and Life Jacket Transport on Flights

Hi could anyone let me know if there are any problems taking a auto lifejacket and handheld VHF on to a flight from scotland to mallorca?

Hi Dave.. I have taken both on flights from Glasgow to Greece...no bother,but I guess it will depend on the airline. best to check.

"Goods acceptable with operators approval as baggage :-

Non-flammable gas cylinders fitted into a life jacket.

Not more than two small cylinders per person , containing carbon dioxide or other suitable gas in Division 2.2. , fitted into a self inflating life jacket for inflation purposes plus not more than two spare cartridges."

It does depend on the airline, but more importantly what their ground staff know about their policy. I had my luggage taken off by BA after an X-ray some years back. I was called from the departure gate and told I had prohibited items in my baggage (CO2 bottle on lifejacket + 1 spare). I explained their policy to them, and after a phone call a red-faced official was most apologetic. Since then I make sure I've got a confirmatory e-mail from the customer service dept. of the airline (Olympic last time) and clearly tell the check-in desk what I have in my luggage.
 
Some airlines do allow it, some don't. I was flying Flybe out of Southampton to do a delivery back from CI's and was not allowed to take lifejackets. VHF was not a problem -as long as it's turned off! Check with the airline first as others have said.
 
We were not allowed bring a pair of vhfs onto a flight once on grounds that we could communicate " on the plane". We were allowed to put them in the checked baggage.

I was stopped bringing an auto life jacket a few years ago, After i offered to take out the gas cylinger i was still being refused until a supervisor stepped in and as a grand gesture allowed me bring the jacket without the gas, (i posted the gas bottle home)

i have often travelled since, with the jacket in the checked luggage, with the bottle unscrewed. if i am stopped i intend to rely on the Statute.

Flying to Germany with BA, VHF in hand luggage was accepted.
Flying from Germany with BA, it was taken off me, when I got it back on landing it didn't work.... eventually repairs were paid for by BA.
 
The radio should be no problem in checked baggage. The gas cyclinders are a dangerous goods. That doesn't mean you can't ship them it simply means they must be declared and packaged correctly. The freight department of the airline will be far more familiar than the check in for passengers. So if want to be sure approach them first.
There are many items of equipment on an aircraft that are dangerous goods when shipped so don't let that argument confuse you. It is all in packaging and identification. It's also a matter of how lucky you feel. good luck olewill
 
Haven't tried it but have read a few articles in the last 18 months about people taking out the gas cylinder, taking the life jacket with them with the intention of buying a gas cylinder in the destination country. Apparently we do not use a world wide standard for the sizes and threads and people have ended up having to buy a new life jacket.
 
Flew with Easyjet out to Greece a few years ago, outbound no problems with lifejackets; return - Athens airport would not allow them on as hold baggage, pilot was approached and he would not allow them on board - had to leave them behind in Greece. Before the flight Easyjet said there would be no problems. After a lot of 'phone calls the jackets were apparently repatriated to the UK but then lost in transit. The cost of the loss was covered by Easyjet.
Moral of the story: get agreement in writing from the airline before flying, and expect to be challenged.
 
Checkin staff may find it easier to say no than to engage brain and find out what the rules are, ask to speak to the supervisor.
 
Ryanair demand you phone their service line in advance of the flight to declare lifejackets and you also pack them in checked baggage.

I prefer to carry VHF in hand luggage so I can turn it on and prove it works...no problems thus far and on all occasions but one, my cabin baggage went through the scanner and the contents weren't queried.

Took HF radio out to France the same way with no problems
