Any opinions on Glomex masthead 'stub' aerials as opposed to the traditional longer whip aerials ? Its for a Beneteau 211 and this is what the dealer is recommending, I'm a bit concerned about the performance, range etc. I did see one review but it was from 1999 which basically stated that none of the 'stub' aerials could compare with the longer ones - has the technology in them improved in the last 5 years ?

Any opinions or advice welcome.

Thanks,

Declan

Definitely go for the traditional stainless steel whip aerial - always considered the best for sailing boats.

My boat is out of the water this summer for a re fit and is definately going to have the stub removed as the range was less that the hand held vhf.

This may have been due to the mast head light being so very close to the aerial and just slightly taller.

I had a steel whip and got good reception, but I have converted to a Vtronix Hawk and find that this is way better, and gives me an instant readout on wind direction when tacking.

I've used a "stub" aerial for last 12 years and never had a problem.

In theory a resonant quarter wave should be a bit better but unless you are working at the limits its unlikely you would notice any difference.

I’m just changing back to a whip with integral wind indicator from a stub helical. The insulation around the helical broke down then saw through bino’s that it was swinging around at the top of the mast.
The wind indicator went AWOL at the same time. I blame the Cormorants.
