Vetus Ursus manual winch, jammed

Any tips for freeing up a Manual Vetus Ursus anchor winch? I have done some research online and discovered it was made for Vetus by Lofrans so the mechanics hopefully similar. Would it be prudent to open her up and have a look, I don't want to have an explosion of springs and cogs going off in my face.
