Hi all,
I am looking at buying a used Vetus Ursus manual anchor winch. Apparently they were provided with a gypsy for either an 8mm or 10mm.

Any ideas on how to check the size? Anyone have one that they can measure so I can compare with the one for sale?

Thanks!

Cannot help you except that 'apparently'

The windlass was made for Vetus by Lofrans and may be the same or at least similar to the Royale.

Vetus used to have downloads of their manuals on their website and/or you could have a look at the Lofrans website to see what they say about the Royale.

To compete internationally windlass makers need to offer a huge variety of gypsies for the multitude of the different chain specifications. If Lofrans did make the Ursus for Vetus it would be logical for them to use the same gypsies as they used on their own windlass - it might there fore be easy to buy the one you are looking at and simply change the gypsy (ask Lofrans, rather than Vetus). A word of wanting gypsies are commonly expensive.

Thanks!

Yes the cost of a new gypsy would probably push me to buy a new Royale. Crazy prices!

The owner has measured the gap for the chain and it seems a 10mm would probably not fit. As they only produced the Ursus with either 8mm or 10mm it should likely be ok. I may take a punt...

I'd go for it (unless it is stupidly priced). You can always re-sell it - defining gypsy size when you post the item for sale.

I would not fancy hand retrieving 10mm chain with a manual windlass.
