vetus slow start but will start. but chucks out black cloud of desil and soot

this does this every time I start up .Im on the river so am very concerned about this no smoke she performs well until I turn it off in the locks.please help if you can

Welcome to the forum. I think we need a bit more info on your engine, age, condition etc. My Sunline had 2 Merc/Isuzu diesels, and these smoked a wee bit at idle. This was due to being slightly over fuelled at idle, and the smoke cleared above idle, whether hot or cold. I also switched off in locks, preferring the tranquility to 2 diesels.
