My newish white Vetus steering pump located immediatly behind helm has been weeping for ages.
The weep is from seal on steering shaft and have obtained replacement seal.
From the limited view of the pump it looks like whole pump has to be removed and dissembled and the seal fitted from "inside" the pump.
Anybody done the job ?
When I remove that rear plate on the pump body are 500 springloaded bits about to leap out and spread themselves in a scary heap all over the floor ?

I haven't done a Vetus but did a Teleflex steering pump some years ago and if it's an axial piston pump , which most are, it will have springs inside each piston, 9 in my case so yes watch out for flying springs and things

Nothing flies out-the plungers backed by compression springs are radially mounted-just take care-Vetus have a cutaway diagram as I recall on their web site. I had mine apart when it was new.
Pretty sure the whole assembly comes out of the case in one piece and then you can access the oil seal.
For the life of me I cannot remember why I took it apart.

Thanks for Comments

Just removed and looked inside all fairly basic plumbing with the mini pumps on springs, only problem appears to removing ball race immediately in front of offending weepy seal preventing its removal.
Am going to get it out by hook or by crook but very very carefully .:)

Was pondering this last night(as one does) and thinking along those lines.Perhaps a few mins in front of fan heater to warm alloy housing but before steel bearing starts to expand.
If all else fails will be forced to walk at least 30 ft to next door workshop, where they do unspeakable things to seals and bearings in automatic gearboxs for a living and have all sorts of weird extractor thingys.
Might need to bring them some donuts tho!

All now sorted ....next door had some device that slides inside bearing, expands to grip inner bit of race and then is pulled out with slide hammer.
Dead blimming easy when you have gear, suspect a right drama and damage to housing if not.
Ooo and the peeps who supplied the bits got the right seal but the wrong paper gasket so old one was reused.:(
