I’m struggling with a really small leak from the exhaust manifold on a Perkins 4.270. Just before it goes into the water-cooled part of the exhaust system. I could do with some suggestions on what to try next.

After the engine has been running for five minutes plus you see very small clouds of white smoke. They are difficult to see and you need a torch to shine through them to see. Without a torch you cannot see anything. Also at high RPM there is nothing, but I’m assuming that’s because they are just being pulled into the air intake rather than drifting around the engine room.

I cannot see an obvious location where the smoke is coming from.

I removed the manifold and water-cooler.

I blocked off both manifold inlets and filled with water and left for a few days. No leak anywhere.

The injection elbow was pretty suspect and covered with some sort of epoxy metal, So I completely replaced it.

I then replaced the manifold back with new gaskets. But I still see the leak.

How on earth do I find this?

If I could I would like to replace the whole lot. But I cannot source the original manifold at all.

The only other option I think I have is to get the entire Bowman heat exchanger setup for the Perkins 4.236, except the bolt holes are completely wrong (the actual exhaust outlets are right though). So a pair of adaptor plates might work. Seems fairly expensive though :-)

i dont know the engine , but that era had open crank case vents? are you certain it is a leak and not oil or antifreeze burning off?

I'm not certain that it's a leak and that is very plausible explanation. However, there is a hose that goes from the top of the crankcase into the inlet manifold. So I guess that it's not oil.

Is that hose newish, as the oil will make it swell and reduce the internal size, even in extreme take a flat shape and crack etc.

Also there might be more crank case gas than the vent system can cope with, leading to venting from the dip stick tube.

soapy water poured over a cold manifold & run engine while continued pouring of soapy water. Not pouring on a hot manifold.

thank you. Some useful tips there. The hose is very ancient. Will replace it.

I replaced the hose to no avail ( but it needed replacing). Next step was giving the engine a good clean ( which was overdue )!

After that I noticed the water-cooled jacket of the cooler novelty manifold was damp. looks like this is leaking onto the manifold, and the smoke I saw was water Vapour!
