Very odd, why would someone remove a thread concerning missing identification plates?

Is this a case of over-reaction to sub judice chatter, getting in the way of forum-members discussing the various reasons for showing/having/fitting and possibly removing a hull-identification plate?

Pity. I felt I was learning much I hadn't known, about what's right and wrong with current anti-theft methods, and their abuse.

Very nearly funny. Not nearly enough, though. I was hoping at the least, we'd hear whether the Waveline had had a murky past, or was genuinely for sale by its owner.

I think the original poster asked for it to be removed.

Some of the posts had I believe overstepped the mark and might have lead to legal action

The thread was descending into serious defamation. Calling someone a villain.... Then naming them and putting a picture of their home in a open forum is a sure fire way to spending large sums of money on lawyers.

Yes. Which isn't OK. Anyhow, the police are on the case.

Stopped following the thread quite early on. An awful lot of posters on this forum seem to have highly vivid imaginations and drift off into the land of fantasy very easily...

I started the tread and subsequently asked it to be removed. There were a few reasons for this.

One is my fault by the words I used in the title. The title assumes that someone had removed the plate and a link to the item was given. To start the tread on an assumption is a little unfair on the seller.

As mentioned above, the names, address, post code and a Google image of the sellers house was posted.

Some posts made out the seller was a thief and yes, I think all this is quite liable.

Lastly, if this was done to me, I would be very upset, particularly if there is a genuine reason for the missing plate.

The thread drifted in a way I didn't intend.

I received several pm's expressing concern.

Hope that helps

Doesn't matter if it is fantasy or reality - posts that effectively accuse a named individual of being a thief have no place on this forum.

Indeed you are right, but unfortunately the forum(s) seem to be taking this distasteful route these days. Particularly folks jumping on a thread and turning it into a punch up, then anything can happen.

Do they? Seemed to me quite reasonable on the basis of a brand-new dinghy and a ripped-off transom id plate that something was suspicious.

Don't those exposed rivet holes and clear evidence of the glue damage on the left (starboard side) of the engine mount, where the plate on these dinghies is affixed, say the same to you? In the balance of probability? I didn't think people were unreasonably imaginitive to see that at all. Just astute.

Posting the seller's address, and making open accusations without further proof, is another thing of course - but not what you're talking about.
