I'm afraid this has got nothing to do with your post really Mike, but some years ago while replacing the deck on Tiller Girl while ashore in Stebbings Boatyard at Heybridge, a guy came in and said that he had watched TG being built at Seacraft at Leigh on Sea. He had the boat built before TG and that was a Vertue. He no longer owned that Vertue, in fact he sailed a small Smack out of Maldon (MN19 I think). The point of this is that the guy who had TG built liked the design so much that he asked Seacraft (who 'designed' TG) to copy the bow, forefoot and Laurent Giles knuckle while obviously scaling up the size to TG's 32ft. In fact TG also had a Vertue style doghouse at one time (one photo remains) which was thoroughly unnecessary as she has 6ft+ headroom without it. The rest of the design owes more to Maurice Griffiths, probably as Seacraft built a number of his designs. All of which makes TG a bit of a mongrel.
I've often wondered which Vertue she copied and whether 'Mum' is still around. It would be a bit of a co-incidence if it was Owendo! Have you any ideas? TG was registered in October, 1965 so I assume I am talking about a Vertue built and launched by Seacraft in 65.
We have V74, Kukri, at the Silva Bay Shipyard School on Gabriola Island, BC, Canada. She was donated to us as a bare hull with all original hardware and equipment. We also have many original drawings to work to. Our ships cabinetry course started rebuilding her deck last summer and she will be completed over the next few years.
She was reportadly built by Aero Marine of Emsworth in 1951 and I would really like to find out a bit more of her history, or info on the yard?
