When we bought our boat last year in the Preveza area, it came with a host of many extra bits and pieces including a Vertically Battened Genoa as a spare sail. Now I must admit to never having heard of such a beast.
Would appreciate any advice on
Why one would be required etc.

I don't think you'll get more roach on a vertically battened genoa, but you'll certainly get a more perfect aerodynamic shape. Horizontal battens are frequently used on long-leech sails to reduce flutter - I've two on my solent.
Much more effective than hooking a leech by using the leech-line to over-tension it.
