Actually Fred, that photo isn't rubbish, its pin-sharp and very good (I'm an amatuer astronomer as well by the way). Did you take this? If so you need to remove it from here before it gets nicked, and see if anyone wants to buy it!

Hm. The level of detail is incredible i must say. It seems that Venus is round, probably spherical, and very small in comparison with the size of the sun.

Indeed!! If the sun were scaled to a ball of 1 meter diam. then Venus would be 8.6mm diam. and approx 77.6 meters distant.

Had a devil of a job finding enough ND filters to get light level into safety zone....not quite sharp...need tripod really with effective 480mm telephoto on digi cam! Might try again later.....
