The Admiral has agreed that we will meet up with her parents for a birthday celebration as they are staying in a nice harbourside hotel and we can stay on the boat.

What's the bottom in Ventnor? Happy to dry in soft mud but don't want to sleep at a saily boat angle if it's sandy, and if there're hard lumpy bits forget it (planing hull). Must be walk ashore so the visitor buoys or anchoring not possible, how many boats can get on the pontoon? The website is ever so vague and obviously out of date.

If Ventnor's a no go I guess it's a taxi from Bembridge?

Local knowledge and suggestions welcome.

Don't fink you'll get you boat in there unless you lucky. It's so small even the taxi ribs fill it up. Vistors bouys or anchoring is the only way to be sure. The taxi service runs in the summer don't know about now.

Been there a few times and although I did once pop into the harbour at high tide it was tight(ish) for space and I was advise by the harbour master to moor on the visitor buoys (as I was only there for a few hours). Very friendly chap, used my dinghy which can be left in the very small harbour. It is a sandy bottom walked in it enough times!

The downside the visitor buoys are very exposed and for my 25ft boat too uncomfortable for an overnight stay unless very calm.

If you happy to dry out, I don't think it is much of a problem as it is flat sand.

A picture tells a thousand words - I happened to be visiting a client in Ventnor only last week and took this shot out of my hotel window.

The Yacht Haven is minute - the walk ashore pontoon on the left of the shot will take about 4 boats. In the evening when I went down to have a look the place was full of fishing boats.

The whole harbour right out to the entrance markers seems to dry out - to sand/mud as mentioned in a reply above. Not a place I would want to take a 30'+ mobo I don't think.

Definitely Bembridge.

BUT - lift your outdrives before you leave the boat!
(I didn't, and we were firmly planted in the goo on a low spring).
Also, don't panic / scream when you use the sea toilet and BLACK muddy water comes in because you are sitting on the bottom.

All part of the fun :)

Bembridge it is then.

Don't right write off Ventnor, It's a very nice place to visit over lunch. Use the buoys or anchor safely if none free, you can dinghy in or use the taxi.

The walk up to the front takes only a few minutes.

Loads to see and and drink up there. ;)

thanks Roger. Yes will probably do a lunchtime anchor. For dinner though mrs E likes to put her glad rags on and will not do dinghys then so it will be bembridge overnight.
